Food & Drink Festival

Look out  for our Festival Maypole if you’re going along to Clitheroe’s Festival of Food and Drink during the weekend of August 13th. It’s out on loan to Morland Dance Academy and their students will be dancing as part of the street entertainment.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Andy Birkett, who designed and made the maypole for us a few years ago, and who this year added new wheels and strengthening to the retiring Queen’s canopy.

Thanks also to Jim Ewart who stepped up at very short notice to repair the New Queen’s canopy.

Barton Festival

Beth at BartonBeth 4 (2) (1)

This is Oliverson’s Year 5 pupil Beth Hodgson ready to join the Procession at Barton last Saturday. Beth was very excited to have the opportunity to represent us at Barton. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Beth, and to her Mum, Karen who made the delightful sign which Beth carried in the Procession.

Celebration Ball

Now that the busiest month in the Festival Calendar is behind us the Committee would like to thank New Queen Roisin and her Princesses for representing our community so wonderfully. Special thanks also go to Beth Hodgson and her Mum, Karen for stepping up at very short notice to represent us at Barton with such enthusiasm.

Tables for the Celebration Ball are flying – we’re almost sold out! The fund raising focus is a target of £1200 to replace our sadly worn out stock of chairs.

Thank you everyone who is buying a ticket for setting us on our way, we’re all looking forward to a fabulous evening on September 24th.

Can you help? We would be very grateful for donations of Raffle Prizes to make our raffle table look really exciting!

I even had a go on the Penny farthing whilst waiting to go back up…. always wanted to try it never envisaged I’d do it in a Kilt though!!

Festival 2016

Dedicated to the Memory of Reg Johnson

As we embarked on the festivities this year, MC Mike Barnes expressed the wish that the Community would “Do him proud!”  Needless to say they did so in grand style!

Even United Utilities picked up the mood of the community and moved Heaven and Earth (and a great deal of tarmac) to reinstate Whittingham Lane, albeit temporarily, so that the Procession could take place.

A glorious day, eight superb decorated floats to give the judges a real headache, a superb turnout for the fancy dress, The Bolton Caledonia Pipe Band, The Longridge Band, The Eclipse Parade Band, BwD Big Band – all combined to set the scene for the crowning of new Festival Queen Miss Roisin Quigg by retiring Queen Miss Melissa Crawley.

In her speech Melissa spoke of the highlights of her reign and in return Roisin expressed her excitement as her year in office begins. She was to begin her duties the very next day when she and her Senior Princesses attended the Bushell House Founder’s Day celebrations and received a special memento of her crowning.

The Queens were then introduced to Junior Special Guest Miss Heather Birkby, the current RHS Young School Gardener of the Year. MC Mike Barnes paid tribute to this amazing achievement from a most unassuming but gifted young member of our community. Heather had prepared, in collaboration with the grow your own project at Guild Lodge, two gifts to represent her love of gardening which she presented to Roisin and Melissa.

We were delighted to have with us, representing the Johnson and Swarbrick families, Lyn Johnson and Jill Wells who had earlier judged the shops and houses entries and a vibrant Carnival themed foyer presentation at Bushell House.

Winning Shop was Goosnargh Chippy, winning House 12, The Square, Whittingham and a special First Prize went to Bushell House

Look out for all the prize cards posted around the village.

In keeping with the very high standard of all aspects of the event this year, the maypole dancers performed their flawless patterns for the Queens and other assembled guests and the Carol May Academy Dancers followed with their “Hot Honey Rag” specially chosen for the occasion and to reflect the Carnival theme.

MC Mike highlighted the achievement of The Longridge Band in being promoted to the Championship section.

As I said the floats gave Judges Phil and Joanna Marshall a real challenge and Phil stressed his congratulations to all the entrants, the decision could not have been closer!

The Raffle Draw completed events on The Square and again huge thanks to Andy Thiele and his team, to all donors of prizes and everyone who bought a ticket.

Sue Brown and her team working from Polly The Vintage Caravan sold out of the ice cream, kindly donated by Crystal Hall, in record time. Thanks particularly to Procession Co-Ordinator Nik Birkby who somehow found time to transport Polly, she would otherwise have been stranded in the Ribble Valley!

Paul Cross and the Celebration Tea Team, with Dot Cross “on the door” ensured that the day was rounded off in the best possible way with the legendary Celebration Tea.

Chairman David Butters said

“It was a great day, the weather was kind to us and everyone seemed to have a good time. I would like to thank all the Committee Members, all the volunteers including the Procession Marshals, Marshals manning the Road Blocks, the Police for being so helpful, the residents of The Square and finally a special BIG Thank You to United Utilities and Kings Construction for the temporary repair of the BIG hole in Whittingham Lane especially so that the Festival could go ahead!”

Melissa Crawley -2015/16 Festival Queen

20160413_115952

Hi, I’m Melissa and my reign as Queen 2015/16 has just taken me and my family to the Palace of Westminster!

I was invited by Ben Wallace MP and we all had tea and biscuits with Ben and his Guests
plus a guided tour. I’m in the photo with Ben and that’s the River Thames behind us.
My sister Chloe did the same when she was Queen in 2012/13.

We all went to Nova Scotia too, for the Twinning. You can find out more about that on the Twinning pages.

We’re Nearly There!

Festival Day is just weeks away. The Maypole Dancers are practising hard, the sun is finally shining and we are hoping for a great response to the Decorated Shops Houses and Gardens Competition to be judged on Festival Morning by Lyn Johnson and Jill Wells. Just drop your address details in to Jill at Goosnargh Chippy – must be within the Parishes of Goosnargh & Whittingham! Entries must be received by 7.30pm on Friday 3rd June

Call in at Bushell House on Founder’s Day 5th June to see their exhibit on the theme “Carnival”

Many thanks to the Trustees of Bushell House for their gift, to be presented to newly crowned Roisin during the Founder’s Day celebrations

Roisín’s First Post

Roisin

So I’ve finally got around to writing this blog and I can’t believe how the time has flown since I was chosen to be Goosnargh Festival queen! It is now only a month away and there is still lots to do; everything should be ready by festival day though!

The first job was to choose my festival attendants. I am very lucky to have lots of friends and family that want to share my big day. I have got my younger sister Niamh, her best friend Ella, close family friend Cerys, little cousins Imogen and Elise, my gym buddy Elsea, best friends Daisy and Erin and Daisy’s little sister Fern. Unfortunately we haven’t found a little boy to carry the crown but if all else fails my big brother Toby will step in!

The next big job was to get a dress. For any girl choosing a dress is a difficult task but when I was shopping for my festival queen dress it seemed a million times harder. We went to bridal shops, we went to every clothes store in sight, we went online where we finally found the perfect dress, or so we thought. When the dress arrived over two weeks later it looked nothing like it did on the picture! Luckily we have now discovered a dressmaker who will make the dress exactly how we want it…phew! It should arrive in a few weeks. On the plus side, choosing the attendants dresses was much easier and everyone is happy with them – they will all look beautiful.

I have recently injured my knee in a gymnastics accident so I am hoping to be better by the big day, although it would be fun to be the first festival queen on crutches! My family and friends have been great at helping me out while I have been hobbling around.

I feel very privileged to have been chosen as festival queen and be representing Goosnargh.

That’s all for now
